Apr 14 Caurnamont

After leaving Langhorne Creek, we visited the town of Strathalbyn. We were very impressed with Strath - lots of old heritage buildings, clean streets, nice shops and lovely gardens. We think it is in the running for Australia's best town.
No idea what this place is, just loved the doors and the stonework
We thought about going across to Kangaroo Island for a couple of days and made inquiries. But they didn't want our dogs (National Parks) and they didn't want our caravan (very expensive to ferry across) so we have decided to leave it until a later trip.
Close by to Strathalbyn is a very small town called Salem. Not sure what it has other than a Lutheran Church, which is where we decided to pull in to for lunch. Nice setting between the church and the graveyard.

Special prize for anyone who can decipher what is written under the clock
Not sure exactly why, but we ended up back along-side the Murray River again. This time we are at a place called Caurnamont, which is at a ferry crossing point. Some of the camping area is still quite soft after the recent flooding. That became very evident when we got our car bogged. Special thanks to the kind local farmer, in a "proper" 4-wheel drive who helped us out.

Here is the map of our travels so far in South Australia, with the purple line showing our route, the stars indicating where we have stayed the night and circles showing some of the stops along the way.

We are staying here a second night. Bit worried about what will happen from now on as school holidays start today in South Australia. Maybe it will become a lot busier on the road and at the camp sites. We'll see...

April 13 Langhorne Creek

We set off from Serviceton for somewhere to stay on the coast south of Adelaide. First stop was Bordertown. Quick stop to see the white kangaroos. Took a photo especially for Julia - remember our trip to Adelaide?
Next stop was Keith. We were really impressed with this town. Nice shops, including a lovely cafe where we got our morning coffee. Nice gardens including a fountain.

They have a pretty special monument at Keith. I'm sure anyone who has seen it will certainly remember it. That is, of course, the Land Rover on a pole. Who would have thought of that?

We drove towards the coast looking for some where to possibly stay the night. Some lovely coastline, but no where suitable for the night. We stopped for lunch at Meningie. Another nice country town. The gloomy, cold weather had cleared to a warm sunny afternoon. Very pleasant.
We checked out a few more places and then ended up at Langhorne Creek, Frank Potts Reserve. Oh well, it's not on the coast but it is a nice spot. We'll explore more of the Fleurieu Peninsula tomorrow.

April 12 - SA Border

We've finally left on our main trip, which will take us up to Alice Springs as our first main target destination. First day, we started out about midday and drove through to almost the South Australian border. After being tempted to stay at caravan parks in Nhill and then Kaniva, we went on to the roadside stop at Serviceton (just on the Victorian side of the SA border) and free-camped at the golf course. It was noisy with trucks going past throughout the night, but it was better where we were compared to the "proper" roadside stop camping area that was right on the road. We might need to use the ear plugs next time. Or maybe we'll get used to the sound of big trucks roaring past as we sleep.
